However, after about four weeks of letting the collards grow back I decided to trim them again for this week’s dinner.
This will probably be the end of the season for my first collard plants. I need the space in the box to plant yellow squash and zucchini seeds. And the new collard plants look okay so far even with the early spring warm weather.
The carrots are still growing well around the edges of the box and I’m looking forward to picking a few of them next weekend. If they really grow into carrots I plan to plant a lot more of them next fall.
My new cucumber plant is having some issues. The stems don’t seem to want to stand up and something has already eaten one of its stems. Boyfriend, who once grew cucumbers as a row crop, is concerned about the color. We are giving this plant another week or two to do a little better before I pull it and start over.
The peppers seem to be adjusting well.
The biggest change this week was that pollen began falling from the oak tress and coated everything.
Added to that, when I trimmed back the collards I found two baby oak trees growing under the collard leafs.
I wish I could reduce some of the oak tree canopy around my house to lessen the pollen, squirrel habitat and shade over my garden but since its against city ordinance to even trim some of the large trees let alone cut them down I'll just keep picking baby oaks out of the garden.
